Justin, isn't falmouth on cape cod???? why are you getting a horizon intrepid? If you go up just a few more bucks (I know you're broke)you can get the horizon with the automatic fog horn hailer and also add the remote mic to allow you to have an inside radio and a cockpit radio all in one. Unfortunately this will set you back about 500 bucks but if you buy the intrepid, then buy a decent handheld, and also get a fog horn it will cost just as much.

David. look into the boat show prices

I got the Spectrum (Upgrade from the intrepid ) for $330 from Post Marine at the NY Boat Show price ---- It will be an Awesome setup (ps I got the RAM mike for $89).......Now the GPS can be hooked up to it an if I trigger the automatic Ch 16 Mayday it will also give my exact location....kewl.........hope I NEVER need it

Radios and Falmouths

David - There is also a Falmouth, Maine. That's where I live. Falmouth is apparently a term used to mean the mouth of a river where it meets the sea, so there are a lot of them. Anyone know more about it than that? I always mean to look it up and don't. As far as that radios go - The Horizon Intrepid will accept the RAM mic (for those who haven't seen it, the RAM is a full-feature second station) just like the Spectrum, but the set up costs $300 instead of $500. You lose the loudhailer/fog horn, but you retain the safety of a full power, masthead antenna in the cockpit, as well as the DSC capability. As for handhelds, I feel that a good handheld is an important safety tool regardless of the fixed mount setup. I carry a Standard Horizon HX350 handheld. Its truly submersible and the rechargable battery pack last a whole weekend if you don't transmit a lot. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

Dan, you are right....

... You are in "ask all sailors", but I was trying to encourage you to start a new thread. In other words post a new question in this forum, that specifically refers to navigation software for your laptop, not the GPS 48. My reasoning is that you would probably get the attention of all those having software experience rather than those only interested in the GPS 48 dialogue. Hope that makes sense now.

Drift Alarm (Anchor Slip Alarm)

Anyone know if there is a portable GPS with an Ancor Slip Alarm feature. I am not sure if this is what it is called -- could be a Drift Alarm. Basically, I am looking for a portable that I can set for overnight anchoring that will warn me if I have drifted beyond my anchor rode radius. Eric Steege Perfect Union H'31

HH GPS with Anchor Alarms

Eric, Anchor alarms are almost a standard feature for Lorans & GPS's. Both my built-in Loran and handheld GPS (Magellan ColorTrak) have them. *HOWEVER*, hearing them is another matter. My handheld GPS is water resistant, and the alarm sounder is apparently on the inside of the case, making it all but impossible to hear unless it's dead quiet and the GPS is very close by. For me, it's unusable for that purpose, so I use my Loran for anchor alarms. If you buy a handheld GPS with the intent of hearing alarms (usually there are 3 types: anchor, cross-track error, and danger), make sure the one you're considering has an audible alarm sounder. My Garmin 48

Just bought a Garmin 48 to use with my laptop. As the laptop does all the work, ie. charts etc. I havent really played with the 48, other than to say that it locks up satellites really fast and will work in the cabin when the antenna iis fixed with the extention cable and suction cup to the inside of a glass hatch in the roof of the cabin.Pratical Sailor gave it an excellent review.
