I have a new to me Bayfield 29. I want to mount a Garmin chartplotter in the cockpit that has a wheel. I posted two pictures to explain what I was thinking of doing. The one picture is of my cockpit, where the red X is, is where I thought I could mount what you see in the other picture. Do you think that would work?

It should work. But I personally don't like the arm with that clam-shell design. It looks like smooth balls held in the clam-shell allowing maximum positional flexibility. I would prefer toothed connections that once positioned really can't move.

I had a similar situation. I was able to buy a teak box at West Marine with a couple of clamps to attach to my binnacle. This gave me an alternate mounting surface for my Garmin Chart Plotter. A couple of bonus benefits was a place for my binoculars, handheld radio or remote microphone and a soda can. The GPS mounted above the compass. I would always remove the box via the clamps and unscrew the wiring harness from the back when we would leave the boat to keep anyone with sticky fingers from stealing it. Additionally, I had a separate power cord at home to copy previous bread crumb trails to my computer or upload new routes for trip planning. You can see I had two different generations of Garmins over the years that I used this system with. My earlier Garmin 478 didn't have AIS display capability. I upgraded to a Garmin 547 that did. Both interfaced nicely with my autopilot. Good luck with what you decide.

Allen you get 5 stats. Great idea.
Kim, The unit must be above the wheel as often access will be needed.

Hello,

The RAM mount you have pictured will work. How you mount it is up to you.

Generally I don't like plotters ( or instruments with buttons) mounted behind the wheel, where you have to reach through the spokes of the wheel to control the plotter. Invariably you are trying to poke through the spokes while the autopilot is on, or someone else is steering, and it becomes a problem. Not a huge problem, but if you can mount the plotter above the wheel it will be easier to use.

Good luck,
Barry
