Looking at a Garmin 740S chartplotter to replace the Raytheon 398 and RayStar 108 GPS sensor. I also use the Navtec Visual Navigation Software version 7 for my charts for area 40 which is HI. Has anyone used this chartplotter before with the Garmin Bluechart G2 HXUS027R Hawaiian/Maria Island Cartography Charts? If how good are they compared to the Navtec Visual Navigation Software?

So far I have found the Garmin Bluechart perfect, everywhere I've been. Don't know about tomorrow, of course.
Fla to RI, Bermuda, Caribbean to RI via Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Windward & Leeward Islands to Grenada.
Not one single problem.
Shop around; they can be had at a deal here & there (ebay/amazon, etc.).

Other than the Garmin Bluecharts has anyone had an experience with the Garmin 740S Chartplotter

I have the 720s which is the the same as the 740s except for the preloaded maps.

It has worked great. Great visibilty in direct sunlight, many extra functions.

It has Nmea0183 which I have connected to my Standard Horizon 2150 VHF to display AIS objects on the chartplotter. It also has Nmea2000 which I have attached an engine information system that displays engine information on the chartplotter.

You can hook up a Garmin Radar unit to it and with the new software upgrade, overlay radar images over the chart information.

There is still more to do but that's it so far.

I have the 750s and it seems to do everything it claims.
My unit is linked by NMEA2000 to the GWS wind transducer, a depth, temperatureand speed transducer and a GMI10 screen which all work well together and it feeds position etc to my VHF.
I also have it linked by NMEA0183 to a Raymarine autohelm which follows routes and wind angle from the Garmin with no problems so far (1 season)
The G2 mapping looks fine although it is for Western Scotland not where you are looking for.
