Garhauer

Edward: Garhauer has a 10 year guarantee on the blocks. You should return the broken ones for replacement. Items in your summary are why I like the 3 block system on the traveler car as opposed to the single triple block. The Garhauer blocks (fairlead especially) I used had a deep "V" so the line never rode up as you described. One advantage I had when I lived in So Ca was I got to "test drive" a lot of the new stuff Garhauer produced so my blocks were constantly being upgraded. The deep "V" was one of my suggestions as the jib sheet was riding on the edge of the block and I did not like that - neither did the jib sheet!! The following is an off shoot of this discussion and not part of the problem. It is directed to older C30's (80's vintage). On those boats the original mainsheet blocks are wasted by this time and loaded with friction making them near impossible to deal with. One solution is the Garhauer mainsheet conversion kit. I forget how many blocks you get with the kit - I think it is 5. Anyway, one of those blocks is placed at the junction of the boom and the mast and is used to guide the mainsheeet to the block at the base of the mast. If you have a rigid or soft vang that block is unnecessary. It's purpose is to keep the area under the boom clear. It serves no purpose if you have a rigid or soft vang as the area is blocked with those devices. If it is eliminated it is just one less friction point to deal with. You can bypass that block and run your mainsheet direct from the boom block above the traveler to the block at the base of the mast. In other words, follow the path of the soft or rigid vang.

Don: returning the blocks is not really an option from Australia, takes too long and too expensive by mail, meanwhile I wouldn't be able to sail, so I better wear it and buy some replacement here, probably Ronstan. It's a shame, as I like the ball bearings in Garhauer's blocks. This Saturday I'll see if I can attach springs to the swivel blocks on the traveller (I do have the new traveller with 3 block system) to prevent them from 'falling over'. Meanwhile I hope Garhauer gets back to me with their take on this issue.I also asked them contact details of their distributor in Australia, which was appointed a few months ago I think, but they keep such a low profile that I can't find them.... Thanks for your suggestion re by-passing the last block on the boom to reduce friction - will look at that too this Saturday. If that works on my boat I would have at least one replacement block for one of the two broken ones! I appreciate your input!

Garhauer honour their warranty

I just received an email from Guido from Garhauer, confirming they will send replacement blocks. It is good to see they honour their warranty. Guido also mentioned that fixing the boomblocks is essential to avoid a twisted mainsheet. I'll still attend to the additional other solutions and see how I go.

Mine always twisted too!!

My 85 C30 had a terrible twisting problem that was almost dangerous, if you had to release the mainsheet quickly. I got a job at West Marine, then promptly repladed the entire mainsheet and ALL THE BLOCKS ON THE BOOM AND TRAVELR and have had no problems. The old blocks would not spin correctly as they were so worn. This also ruined the old mainsheet too. The new sheet and ball bearing blocks did the trick. And at half price with the employee disc. Final Update on sheet twisting problem

I received a new set of Garhauer mainsheet blocks in the mail - superb service, that deserves mentioning. After fixing the three mainsheet blocks at the boom, and replacing the mainsheet with a smaller size (from 10mm to 8mm, or 8/16" to 3/8" for the metrically challenged...:))the mainsheet works admirably well. And we shot up in the placings during the last race!! What a difference it makes if you can work the mainsheet properly!
