Can anyone comment on Garhauer line clutches? They seem to offer a better line size range and are very inexpensive compared to the Lewmars and Spinlocs.

I had them on my 310 and they worked great with zero problems. I think the Spinlocks probably have slightly less line wear but everything I have owned Garhauer has performed flawlessly..

I second the Garhauer rope clutch. I have used a 3-line clutch on my Catalina 30 for 2 seasons - excellent quality and I did my research prior to purchasing the unit.

Can't say enough good about the people at Garhauer and their products. You won't beat the price or quality in my opinion. We've replaced all our line clutches and nearly all of our blocks with Garhauer

We have 5 of them on our 1986, still working great after 21 years.

All thumbs up for Garhauer products. I have a vang made by them and it was about half the price of its competitors and top quality. Also a few blocks here and there. All my sailing pals buy Garhauer hardware -- and love it.

Garhauer products and support (pre-sale) are great

I have a ton of Garhauer on my 310, both factory installed and stuff I added. Less expensive and industrial strength. When I was adding in my topping lift for my spinnaker pole and needed blocks etc, there were great at answering questions (this was not a help desk person, but the actual guy making the stuff) and were very very knowledgeable. Can't say anything about post sales support as I have had absolutely no problems with their stuff.:)

Only one issue with the clutches

I've got ten of them on my h40.5. They have performed well for 11 years except for one problem.

A couple of the clutches would not release when the lever was pushed forward. It seemed like the dog was hanging up.

A call to Garhauer improved the situation. It turned out that I had overtightened the thru-bolts that gang the clutches together. Originally I had two gangs of four clutches and I added a fifth clutch to each gang.

The issue improved but not quite 100%. The two clutches affected are ones that I rarely use. I suspect that they may have some salt deposits that are stopping the dogs from fully releasing. I will flush them out well with a water hose this Spring.

I expect that will fully solve the problem.

I must acknowledge that I believe this problem to be my fault and not Garhauer's. However, they are helpful on the phone.

I've bought other Garhauer products and I think highly of them. They get my vote as a high-quality, reasonably-priced, supplier. I will always consider them FIRST for any hardware gear.

by far the best people in the business

well not by far they may be equal to the torrensens! i had a long talk with mark at the chicago show i had a problem with my turnbuckle boots the plastic ends were breaking. catalina said they were guaranteed for 10 years so i brought one example and photos of them all. i showed it to mark and started to bring out photos and he said "put that away i'm going to make you a full set"!!!. we had a long talk on how catalina recently dropped them and went with seldon for the running rigging, glad mine is gauhauer!!!

The one point I'd make about the Garhauers is that they are probably more likely to abrade the line than the Lewmars. That said, the ones I've used are good gear, but I haven't used the newly redesigned ones yet... so can't comment on them directly.

Garhauer is Terrific!

Replaced all my blocks on my O'Day 302 with Garhauer. They work great.

Had them build me a mainsheet system that fit with the FICO track. Guido knew exactly what I needed. Had a problem with one of the blocks on the system -- sent it to them FedEX on a Monday. Called them on Tuesday afternoon to see what they could do and found they'd already replaced the block, beefed up the part that broke...and had already Express Mailed the replacement so I could sail that weekend. And it didn't cost me a dime.

These folks do good work and they stand behind that work 100%.

They are great cluthes. They will absorb side loads, which many on the other brands will not because they have plastic housing.

I replaced the ones on my Hunter Vision 36 with the new models. The original ones only had single springs, the new ones have dual springs for each unit. I was also going to replace some of the handles. It turned out that it was cheaper to purchase new ones verses updating the old ones.

Bill, Mark, Guido and all of the gals at Garhauer are great people.

May I suggest that you purchase them on the SBO website to support the cause.

I would but they are not available here. I am very happy with past purchases here. Phil, start carrying Garhauer clutches and you will get my sale.

BTW, had a great experience with McMaster-Carr. I bought some parts last week and one of the items was missing. I called them yesterday and they simply said no problem, we will ship that out to you today.

Tim:

Did you call Dave G at SBO? If you don't call you will not know if they are available or not.

One thing about the Spinlock line clutches, some of them will not open readily if the line is heavily loaded. The Lewmars don't have the problem, and either did the older Garhauers I've used.

Catalina Dropped Garhauer As OEM Supplier?

Did I read that right? What's up with that?

Well, if ya read the quote it is limited to the seldon material and I think he meant standing rigging for the base of the shrouds only.

Let the rumor mills begin!:):):):):)

Eventually we'll come up with some facts, like maybe the Catalina Yachts brochures for new boats and their How We Build Catalina Yachts brochure.

My Garhauer line clutches were 15 years old and slipping...they were releasing approx 1" of halyard after the hoist....called Garhauer and talked to Guido...he said the springs were "sprung" and that I should go ahead and replace...I got total new double spring assemblies for a greatly discounted price...can't say enough positive things about the products and people.
