Greetings! OK. So I have decided to go with a Garhauer rigid vang (RV 12-1) for my 1987 H23. I have a few questions for those (many!) who have preceded me: Is the RV 12-1 the correct part? Do I order directly from Garhauer? (Do any distributers deal in Garhauer products?) Also, Garhauer's site states that their rigid vangs are "made to order." What length is that for the H23? Will Garhauer know the H23? Finally, like so many others, any installation tips would be appreciated. TIA, Richard H23 "Invictus"

Vang

I put one on my H240. Great piece of equipment. I think the company is located in California. Give them a call. The owner answered all my questions prior to ordering. The attachments to the boom and mast are what is custom made. If they don not already have a templet for your boat get some sodering (sp)wire and wrap it around the end of the boom and mast. remove and trace on paper. That's all there is to it. I would encourage you to call the company. They are very customer service oriented. I was very impressed with the product.

I added one to my h-23

As I recall, after you order, they send you a form specifying what measurements they need to build it. A couple of things: You will need 1/4 inch SS pop rivets to install it (not all that easy to find nor install since most DIY tools only go up to 3/16). Also, once the mast bracket is installed, it adds a degree of difficulty to stepping the mast. (i.e., With the bracket permanently attached, you cannot lay the mast as nearly flat on the deck and insert the pin in the mast-to-deck fitting. It must be raised to probably 30 degrees -- higher than the extended crutch will hold it -- before you can insert the pin.) I had to drill and punch out the rivets to drop the mast as I prepared for Isabell. It's a quality product, however, if you trailer your boat you will want to explore your options: maybe look at the Boom Kicker and retain the standard vang.
