Hi People, I have a garbage question, I'm sure this has been discussed before but I would like to know members views on trash disposal at sea. First point, please don't get all high minded if responding. I live in the Middle East, the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah. The locals here dump trash out of car windows, from fishing boats and most domestic trash get put in plastic shopping bags and thrown into open skips. These are emptied weekly and the rubbish deposited in big holes in the desert. At least 10% blows back onto roads and scatters around the dump. So, there is no need for a dialogue on modern recycling techniques, thank you. There are none available here in the UAE. The point is, I need to dispose of my boat trash and I'll like some serious practical comments on the best way of causing the minimum of damage to the environment. At sea, several miles of shore, in deep water 50 feet plus, all bio-degradable stuff get dumped overboard, as with glass and paper. Bottles get smashed and paper torn into small pieces. All plastic and Styrofoam gets washed, bagged and returned to shore to be dumped in the desert. Aluminium drinks cans get ripped apart and dumped overboard. However, this practice bothers me, (Oh yes! I have a conscience) Does anyone have any info, web links or views on how aluminium degrades in seawater? Thanks in advance, this message is not intended to get anyone’s back up but serious comments would be appreciated. Morris

Beer cans

Here's what I'll do. I'll attach several soda and beer cans to a line and leave them overboard for a period of time. I'll photograph the experiement and post the results. Benny, forgive me if I don't sink the whole boat, I'm kinda attached to it. MJ
