I am preparing to paint my bottom with Interlux Ultra with biocide. I will apply 2 coats. Using the charts for determining gallon it is approx 2 gallons. How much did it require to paint your 420. The paint is around $200/gallon.

Just my own personal experience- The second year of a two-year paint has very poor anti-fouling performance.

I apply ONE VERY THIN coat with a 3/16" nap roller and roll it out just as thin as possible while still covering. Most of the ablative paint is gone after a year and there is no buildup. With two coats and a 3/8" nap roller you will have buildup and in 4-5 years you will be stripping or aggressively removing paint that is flaking off.

One thin coat each year gives good anti-fouling with no buildup. Just MHO.

I've used Ultra for 10 years now on '84 h27. On h27, one gallon does one full coat - I put on two coats and it lasts 3 years in dirty, brackish tidal river water. first year, botton remains perfect. By year two, dirt/mud from river starts to build up, so I brush botton 1 or 2x/ yr. Year 3 small areas of critters start to show up, but still good performance. See pic below of last haul after 3 years. Also see After pics. Since I know 3 year schedule, start looking for paint a year ahead - got 2 gals of Ultra Black on Ebay for $79 / gal. !!

I agree with Rich: put on one thin coat of ablative paint per season. The rule of thumb for bottom paint coverage is LWL x Max Beam x .85. The average coverage of typical gal of bottom paint is 400 sq ft.

Interlux Ultra (which the OP is using) is not an ablative paint. FYI.
