I just purchased a 1981 Cat22. My wife and I were wondering about the ice chest in the galley, how do you empty the chest when the ice melts? Does anyone really use it as an ice box?

Everything I've ever read on this subject indicates that people do not use the ice chest in the slide out, except perhaps for storage of gear. We have a 1971 Cat22 and it did not have a galley at all, so we are making our own. As for the ice box, I would love to do a custom installation of a large icebox underneath the port cockpit seat, forward end. This area is difficult to reach for storage anyway, so my idea is to utilize it as follows. I would really appreciate any feedback and suggestions on this idea. 1. Purchase a water tight hatch (Plastimo makes several sizes); 2. Install hatch in forward seat, port side. 3. Buy a commercially made cooler of the right size to fit up into seat cavity, with at least 2 inches to spare on both the outboard and inboard edges. 4. Install cooler up into seat cavity. This is the critical part. I'm considering fiberglassing it in place, plus support underneath the cooler. Will probably require adding 1x2 wood frame around cooler as part of fiberglass wrap (i.e., integrated into cooler), then attach with stainless screws and finishing washers to seat. 5. Add small 12V pump to cooler outlet for removing water. Suggestions anyone?

keel lock-

The keel lock down bolt is in there, unless the one on your boat has been removed then glassed over.

Robert: We never use the ice box of the galley except for storage. A portable well-insulated box works well on the floor. We do use the water tank, and siphon out the remainder when finished. Dick
