Hello everyone, I have a question about the sailplan: I am planning on buying a '78 C22 (no poptop, has swing keel), and have always liked sailing gaff rigs; has anyone ever seen this done to a C22? I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this being done, and if so, what the result was. Thanks, Robert (I currently own a Columbia 23T)

I've never heard of it....

....nor can I understand why anyone would want to. Seems like this is a good question for you to direct towards Frank Butler.

No, and don't . . .

I have never seen nor heard of a gaff rig on a C-22. Generally you see gaff rigs on cat boats. The gaff rig is important to a cat boat because they do not have jibs. The c-22 has a jib and therefore does not need any additional sail area on the main. I hope this helps, Ted

Riggin' won't let you.......

On the hoist, the throat of the gaff won't go past the spreaders and, on a tack, the gaff won't go past the backstay. PS, you NEED the backstay:)
