The gipsy on my windlass is specified (by Lewmar) as sized for the pitch of (among others) 5/16" US BBB, 5/16" US High Test 'G4' (ISO Spec) or 1/4" US Transport 'G7' (ISO Spec). Since 1/4" G7 is both lighter and cheaper than 5/16" G4 or 5/16" BBB, and since it has a 3150lb WLL (as compared with 3900lb for 5/16" G4 and 1900lb for 5/16" BBB), I'm really tempted to use it as my all-chain rode. (I have a 14klb/36ft boat, and the reduction in bow load is attractive.) I note that Transport G7 is "not for overhead lifting," while the G4 and BBB have no such notation.(I don't think that DOT thinks truckers will try to use anchor chain for hold-downs.) The G4 and BBB are "extra thick hot-dip galvanized," while the G7 is "supplied in yellow (gold) chromate finish for easy identification and rust prevention." Has anyone on the list used transport G7 and noticed any shorter service life due to the marine environment?

G70 Transport chain makes an excellent anchor rode - strong and durable. Only Grades 80 & 100 are listed as Hoisting Chains.
