1. I've successfully linked my Garmin 48 with my Autopilot 4000 on my Hunter 340. However, it won't take a 30 degree turn in routes on the G 48. Is that the nature of the beast or is there something I can do? 2. The Autopilot, when on a compass bearing rather than the GPS, will veer slightly when the refrigeration cycles. Any easy solution to this irritation? Thanks. Jim

Just an idea.

Jim: When I installed my autopilot (Navico 300CX), it stated that the unit should be wired to the Instrument circuit. It sounds to me that you may have your refridgerator on the same circuit as the instruments/autopilot. When the reefer. unit cycles (big power draw) there is not enough juice for the autopilot. I would just make sure that the reefer is on a seperate breaker (by it self) and the same for the electronics.

Good Idea

I wired my ST4000 so that it "feeds" power to my other Autohelm instruments. It is on a toptally seperate circuit as suggested by Steve. Had a lot of trouble wiring the Garmin 45 properly to the NEMA port on the ST4000, but after several contacts with both Garmin and Raytheon customer service I got the wiring correct. (As you probably know the wiring directions supplied with the Garmin were wrong). Reguarding you problem with the Autohelm in track mode reading the Garmin routes: It might be the same problem I was having. The Autohelm was asking for the next waypoint before the boat reached the current waypoint. It was always a waypoint ahead of itself. I "solved" this problem by making my first waypoint my dock (or my current location) before starting a trip. If the problem is one specific to a 30 degree turn check you fluxgate compass location.

Thanks Pete & Steve, but . . . <grin>

I'll check the wiring as that may be my problem on the variance. But tell me more about the wiring correction you made for your G45. My G48 will work, but any change in the preplanned route on my GPS over 30 degrees sends the boat into never never land. I gather Pat that you don't have that problem ???? Jim

Garmin NEMA wiring to ST4000

The NEMA cable for the Garmin 45 (I ASSUME THE 48 IS THE SAME) comes with instructions for wiring according to the color coded wires. I don't remember exactly what color wires were supposed to go where according to those instructions. I THINK(!) Garmin instructions indicated that the red wire was for power access while the brown(?) went to the NEMA in and the white(?) to the NEMA out. It didn't work. I contacted both Garmin and Raytheon and got conflicting wiring instructions which were both wrong. However, it became obvious that the problem was one of a bad ground. The soultion came from RAYTHEON tech support (I believe the a phone number is located in the installation/operating instructions.) The correct wiring had the black lead GOING DIRECTLY TO A CLEAN GROUND, the red for power and one of the others to the NEMA in port on the ST4000 allowing it to read the data from the Garmin. It's been several months since I did the installation and would have to look at the wiring to confirm what I just wrote. I suggest that you contact Raytheon tech support and if you do not get satisfaction from them I can check the wiring when I haul out this Thursday. Let me know. Also, you have top be certain that both units are set to read the same NEMA format (0183) Good luck. (captainpat@prodigy.net)
