Thank you and here is a followup. I found rebuilt Hitachi 55 Amp alternators through two web sites. www.Go2Marine.com and www.apimarine.com Price to me, no core return, rebuilt and with corresponding Yannmar Part number, US$150.00 as of May 20, 2002. (Yes, One - Hunddred - Fifty dollars US) Also no instructions, harness or help except for the bare bones part. Apparently API does a lot of business in rebuilding alternators. In my case, this is for my Yanmar SB8 (8 HP) Diesel Thanks, Bob

Hitachi 55 is different.

You probably know this Bob but others may not. If you buy one of these without instructions or wiring diagrams they can be hard to install. The H-55 requires an "exciter" voltage, an extra little wire. A few of us who are upgrading from the 35-Amp Hitachi had some trouble getting this figured out.

Ed, can you tell us a little more?

I am curious about this "exciter wire". Does this mean that the alternator has an external regulator? What did you all have to do to use the Hitachi 55?
