Canal Follies
Dec.23, 2000Dear Ron,If your lucky you can catch some real mayhem. When we were doing our transit of the canal friends of ours who volunteered to act as line handlers on a 103 foot sail boat had the experience of entering the Caribbean throught the last lock backwards! The crew on the helm had decided to use the remote control rather than sully his hands by putting them on the wheel and when the turbulence started putting the boat sideways he wasn't adept enough with the remote to catch it. The owner pushed the crew out of the way and grabbed the wheel and with judicious use of throttle and wheel kept the yacht, all 103 feet of it, from colliding with the side of the lock, which is only 110 feet wide, but he couldn't stop the boat from doing a complete 180° turn in the lock. Not colliding with the side of the lock was an impressive bit of seamanship as far as I was concerned. They didn't want to try to turn the boat back around, and so they motored out of the last lock in reverse. Boy, would my face be red if I caused that to happen!Merry Christmas,Brian Pickton of BeneteauOwners.netAboard the Legend, Rodney Bay, St. Lucia
