I agree with Paul, for convenience you can't beat gas. I originally had a two burner Origo (Kerosene). It was a great stove, and while living aboard, the constant maintenance , i.e. ensuring clean kerosene, regular replacement of burners ($$$), pre-heating with alcohol, and wiping the overhead of soot, was not a problem.
It also provided a tremendous amount of heat, which was OK in winter, but in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, made it unbearable down below during the long summer days. One other thing was that you could't really control the flame, and had to use a "flame tamer/diffuser". One day I decided to join the crowd and switched to a Force 10 two burner Propane stove, with 10 pound Aluminum tank mounted aft of the cockpit, and included a solenoid control valve for added safety. I never got around to installing a sensor in the bilge, but followed Pauls procedure as far as burning off all gas at the stove before shutting things off. Cin Cin is now in Europe, and due to plumbing differences between US/Canadian SAE specs and European metrics, I have had to dismantle everything , and wish I had my old Kerosene stove back !!!
Due to costs, I will probably go with an Origo 3000 non-pressurized alcohol stove. I don't foresee any problems with fire. I had a few flare-ups with the old stove, and they were invariably caused by not preheating sufficiently with the alcohol, and on attempting to pre-heat again, it would flare-up (not particularly dangerous, but a little frightening at first). With the Origo 3000 that problem is eliminated. Although I was very safety concious, I still feel I will sleep a little sounder with the alcohol. Incidentally Butane seems to be more common than Propane in the area where I am. Now what to do with my old stove and tank, etc ??? The harbor master advised me to dump it in the Dumpster, yeah sure, the tank alone is over $200 at West Marine, Oh well live and learn. By the way Paul, haven't heard from you for quite a while, how are your plans looking regarding the IFR in Sweden???
