Need to replace my foward hatch over the v-berth. I am unable to find the correct size. The cutout opening is 19.5in x 19.5in. Any ideas where I might find one?
Lewmar and Bomar both make hatches for 19.75 x 19.75 cutout. Presumably you could shave 1/8" off each side to make the hatch fit.The alternative is to get the Lewmar 'flat base' hatch, which sits on top of the deck and doesn't extend into the opening - that will fit any size opening. The Lewmar part is 'Ocean 60' - $655 at WM... ouch!Cheers,Bobs/v X SAIL R 8
I replaced the OEM plastic forward and center bay hatches on my 28.5 with Bomar low profile. The new forward being a 20"x20" nominal was a drop in fit; however, the new mid bay hatch was larger than the opening by about 3/8 to 1/2" total and I used an Orbital sander to slowly open it out to pencil lines scribed on the deck. I then re-sealed the plywood edges with a coat of Marinetex before installing the aluminum hatch - it was a perfect fit and the inside flange has a clean 1/16" to 3/32" sealant joint all around at the headliner edge.Go slow with 80 grit, then finish with 150 grit and clean up th ecorners with a Dremmel tool sanding drum.
I am still looking for a used replacement hatch. If I come upwith anything I will try to let you know where I found it.If you have to go with new, check Defender.com.Good luck,EddieS/V Blue HeronCape Coral, Fl
Don't think we will want to cut out more. Our opening is 19 1/2 square too on our 1985 28.5. Looking to find one perhaps on ebay so not to have to pay the high Bomar prices. When I called Hunter they told me Bowmar was the only one that could fit our opening with a low profile at $595.
