I currently have a Hood 810 LD headsail furler on my 28 footer which works most of the time for reefing as well. However, it has lost it's grip sometimes when gusting and that's when one needs it the most to hold the reef. Pomeranate used ot offer an upgrade to a single line system but no longer. They are now offering a Hood 707 SL complete system for $775. Seems like a good deal for a whole new system rather than an upgrade. Anyone have any feedback on the Hood 707 or alternative? Thanks.

Hood 707

I have a 1 1/2 year old Hood 707 on my '91 Catalina 28. It works well. We also had an older Hood SL fuler (can't rember the model number but it is the same sized unit) that looked like origional equipment that gave us no problems until we lost the mast. (It kind of got bent). *yks I think any of the major brands within the same price range will provide similar service life. Ford or Chevy ;D

Lost the mast?

After all the recent talk about standing rigging lifespan, I am curious. How did you lose your mast? Tim R.

The DL is a Furler, NOT a Reefer...

..that's why it won't hold. As a new furler line gets smoother and thinner with age, it will lose its grip. Hence, a SL Reefer is best to have or to upgrade to! I upgrade to the SL from a DL a few years ago for that reason. This has been discussed several times in the past and should have some discussion in the archives.

HAVE YOU TALKED TO HOOD?

STEPH, IN JUST THE LAST 3 MONTHS I BOUGHT THE UPGRADE TO THE HOOD 810SL. THEY GAVE ME A NICE "DISCOUNT" AND IT WORKS GREAT. THE PRICE WAS JUST FOR DRUM AND VERY BOTTOM PORTION OF THE EXTRUSION. IT TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO INSTALL AND I THINK THEY CHARGED ME ABOUT $400. MY OLD SWIVELS AND EXTRUSION SEEM TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE (1989). FOR ME IT WAS A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE AND A LOT EASIER TO UPGRADE THE EXISTING FURLER. IT SURE WORKS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL! HERE IS THE CONTACT INFO I HAVE: Pompanette Showroom and Customer Service Locations 1515 Southeast 16th Street Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316 Phone: (954) 525-6367 Fax: (954) 525-4025 Pompanette customer service: Pompanette@Pompanette.com GOOD LUCK, JIM B.

special at hood for converters

I did speak to Hood at Pompanette... the special is the 707 SL for 50% off = $775. They don't have the conversion kits anymore (at least now). So they are offering the new system and they ask that the old one be sent back to them. Seems like a good deal ($775) for a new one. Glad to hear that it works well. Thanks

For my money.....

I really love the Harken Cruising Furler, $1198 here on this site. Another super buy is the CDI flexible furler, $581.25, we've sold hundreds of these, always with positive feedback. http://shop.sailboatowners.com/category.htm?fno=400&cat=1606 Happy Thanksgiving. Five years with a 707

Steph, I have had a Hood 707 SL on my CS 27 for 5 years. No troubles; has performed very well. It is a DIY install. Fits over your existing headstay and it is easy to remove the drum and upper swivel for cleaning and winter storage (assuming you take your mast down, as I do). If you do take down your mast each fall I'd check out how you will attach the mounting toggle to the stemhead fitting. I use two extension plates which are easier to pin to the stemhead than the 707s toggle.
