I have the Stream Stay furling on my 1985 h31. It does not work well. I am looking for information on how to lubricate or sevice this unit. Any info would help. If anyone has a diagram of the workings of this unit that would be great.

A Little TLC

Michael, I have a Stream Stay on a 88 Hunter 30. I have had some problems with the system over the years. The lower unit works pretty well but the top swivel is usually the problem child. I completely disassembeled both units several years ago and cleaned all parts and lubricated with Mac Lube. The unit is equipped with plastic (Torolon) bearings and they might be worn, but mine were OK. I reinstalled the system and each year I relube the top swivel with the Mac Lube while still on the foil. Since then the unit is doing pretty well. It ain't no Harken but I am still $1600 ahead. I have a little information on the unit If you will send me a fax number I will try to send you the info. There is an outfit in NY I think that bought the rights to the system and they say that they have improved the design but it was quite pricy and I was leary of throwing good money after bad. Frank

h31 furling problems

Well Jim the bottom drum does not turn easily, the head sail does not deploy easily and is hard to furl in when deployed. I think the bearings need some lubrication or maintenance.I am looking for info on how to lube these bearings and what to use to lubricate them.

Quik clean up job.

Mike: Get a can of Carb cleaner with a nozzel. Spray your bearings with this stuff. Then flush with fresh water and see if that does the trick. It should help even if it does not cure the total problem. If you have worn parts then a total disassembly and replacement of parts will be in order.

Caution with Carb cleaner

Be careful. The bearings are plastic and the carb cleaner might be too aggressive. I also had the same problem many years ago. Since then I service it every spring. I use WD-40 as a cleaner. It's a messy job. Spray the upper bearing of the halyard swivel. Spin the unit and spray some more. Initially there will be a black stream of wd-40 flowing out of the bottom bearing. Continue to flush with wd-40 until it runs mostly clear. Do the same thing with the bottom bearings. There are a couple of holes in the unit that you can spray. Use them all but concentrate on the uppermost one. Continue to spray and spin the unit back and forth until the flow out the bottom is also mostly clear. Lots of rags and/or paper towels are helpful. Now that they are clean they do need to be lubricated. WD-40 is NOT a good lubricant. I have used a couple different products but have had good success with a product similar to CRC 6-56 but it also has teflon added. When I get back to my boat I will look at the label and post the description. I you dock near a coal yard or agricultural area where there is a lot of dust or silt in the air you may want to consider repeating the operation in mid-season.

Carb

Steve Dion is absolutely right, as usual. But be sure you get the carb cleaner that won't melt plastic ball bearings. Seriously, this is a huge distinction.

Also see "Rig-Rite".

The Hyde Streamstay One on my '79 H37C is still working fine. It is well designed, I think, with real bearings and the ability to maintain it. You can see the parts breakdown on the "Related Link" below. I have the small booklet if that would help. I thought that I put it here on HOW some years ago.

Halyard Tension?

I find that if I have alot of tension on the Halyard, furling and unfurling can be difficult. Cracking Halyard tension off just a bit makes it very easy to furl or unfurl. After I have the adjusted the furl to the desired position I go back and retension the Halyard to get the correct sail set.
