Selden make a good furling mast. There are lots of owners on here that have the in mast furling and very successful. I've had ours for 3 years and wouldn't do without it. I have not had any jamming issues or problems. Use all comes down to technique. There's a right way to furl and unfurl. If you do it the wrong way it could jam. Do it the right way and you'll have no prblems.

Anyone have any experiences using furling booms? I think Facnor makes one. I sort of have my eye on it but they're pricey and I'm not sure how well it will work given the batten config on the sail on my Hunter 27E (aka Edge).

thanks

I think it was practical sailor that evaluated furling booms within the last few years.

I've got a Selden furling main on my '03 H326. The only problem I had was after a rigger was on board working on a problem I had with the furling jib and had evidently loosened the main halyard a little. After re-tightening the main halyard I've had no problems since. To play it safe I also try to wind the main in on a starboard tack if I'm out on a windy day.

I have a furling main with vertical battans on a H 33. I have had unfurling problems from time to time. As I have struggled sailing alone, I have found a number of things. First someone else stated that the main halyard must be tight and checked regularly. It should be tightened when the sail is out. One must make sure that the vertical battans furl 100% vertical all the time. That is the most important thing to watch. When I furl in (reef) during sailing when overpowered, I find that the sail will not unfurl well and next time out I have jams. The boom must be as tight as possible to the arch to ensure that the furl goes in at 90 deg. If the boom is not flat, the sail will furl badly and pinch at the top of the mast. Next time out will cause problems. If one does not keep a bit of tension on the outhaul when furling, the furl will not be tight enough and the furled sail will jam as it furl too fat! I push the boat and sail hard. After four years, I believe that the sail might have stretched somewhat. I am now wondering if I need to cut the sail a bit high up on the mast? When I get a pinch in the top of the sail unfurling, I find sailing with the pinch in for a while will pop it out due to pressure on the sail while underway. Tacking back and forth a couple times will also release the pinch quicker as well.

There is no doubt that the furling main with vertical battans adds to sailing ability. What I find is that it is delicate to use and one must be careful not to have jamming problems.

Love It

I Love my 2007 H-36 with furling main no battens.
The more you use the better you learn to furling it with out any problems of jamming which I have not had.
When furling in at the end of the day I usually do it on the fly while still sailing along instead of pointing directly into the wind, basically sailing on port or starboard tack ,starboard is better, just a nuff so pressure is keeping the sail tight while going back into the mast instead of flogging all over, this learning point is from reefing while single handling.

I may be too late but I vant you to know that Forestspar makes a boom furling that is very good.I installed one on my Bavaria 31 and it works great. The main plus is,that you dont have to change the mast, can have horizontal full battens and your main can be change for the boom furling. If, you want more detailed information,I will be glad to provided to you.God sailing,Imre Berecz e-mail;iberecz@cox.net
