Furling Main Question

We have a Hunter 320 2001 with an in mast furling system.Once your sails are out, do you leave the mechanism on "Ratchet" or "Free".What are the benefits or problems of either?

I have a 356 with likely the same system. I never touch that mechanism and just lock the two cam locks down on each of the continous furler loop ropes and that would the mast winch from any further rotation

If you want to operate the furling unit with the continuous line from the cockpit, leave thesetting on free. On ratchet, the unit will only operate with a winch handle. The ratchet position should be used when there is a problemwith the continuous line or conditions requirealot of muscle. Also, if you are going to be gone from your boat for an extended period, by switching to ratchet, the main sail can not be unfurled by accident. The system is locked inplace and can be operated only by the mast winch.
