furling main problem

I have a problem with the main clew on the furling main on my 2000 Hunter 340. As you know the sail retracts into the main mast when not in use, except the small triangle of a clew that is exposed to the sun. The part is has a blue sunbrella piece on it, I suppose to protect the sail itself from ultraviolet light. However, the strips of material sewn on top of the sunbrella triangle to attack the clew to the outhall have disintigrated, I guess because of the sun exposure. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the solution? ajp

That should not have happened. They would be your first line of defense.

Ripped the clew out. I think the reinforcing strapping may have just deteriorated from UV. Or, perhaps the strapping wasn't UV inhibited. Regardless, it's no big deal to have a local loft repair it, but you should do so to avoid losing the clew and having it take a piece of the main with it, as I observed.
