Furling Jib Problem

Altho I have sailed before, I have never used a furling jib. When we bought our boat this summer someone in the Marina helped us set it up. Our problem is that when we attempt to come about the jib NEVER sets to the other tack, and we are pulled back onto our original tack. Our answer to that has been to furl the sail in, come about and pull the sheets in on the other side, a major operation to say the least. TOday in heavy wind ( heavy to me anyway) we could not get the jib to furl in and could not get off the starboard tack.....after alot of MAyhem ( which is BTW the name the boat came with) we finally furled the jeib in and then enjoyed the afternoon w/o the jib.Ther are no other Cat22's in our Marina to compare the rigging with. Any help is appreciated

Furling problem?

As you describe it, your problem is you cannot get your jib to set to the other tack when coming about. This does not sound like it has anything to to with the furling mechanism, since it does not come into play during tacking. Having had a C22, it is a rather light boat and does not carry a lot of momentum during tacking. Coordination between the helmsman and jib sheet handler is critical. You should start the tack close to the wind and with as much boat speed as possible. When turning through the wind, the sheet handler should quickly and completely loosen the original sheet (take it completely off the winch) and haul in on the other sheet. The helmsman has to pay attention to keeping the bow moving through the wind to the new heading before the boat speed drops too low. Without the coordination, the boat will stall, and not complete the tack. Don't give up on that jib, because it is the real power that drives the 22. Good luck!

Get Some Lessons

I agree with Pete. Sounds like what you need are some lessons. Not being able to get the jib to come across during a tack is not a problem related to the furling system. Better take care of yourself, crew and passengers by knowing what you are doing when out on the water. Although a C-22 is very forgiving, it won't do all the work for you.

Got Sheets?

From what you desribed it sounds like you may not have the sheets set up right. It sounded like you were trying to "pull the sheets in on the other side". You should try to get some help from any other small boat owner in your area. Furling gear is similar on most boats and it generally works the same way. Get two kinds of help: - ask someone to help you set it up and explain how it works, and, - ask someone to sail with you and show you how to use it. There are very few sailors who will not be willing to 'give advice' and few who would think less of you for asking. Take care and enjoy your boat.

Furling Problem

Lynn; I agree with Pete's suggewstion, I occasionally have the same problem. It is usual brought on by not tacking at the proper time/speed. This will tend to stall you and force you back onto your previous tack. Kick the sheet off quickly and turn thru the wind as rapidly as possible. I sail with my wife but handle the sheets and tiler myself so I have expierence the same effect when I was not qick enough in the tack. bob

have you tried

Have you tried waiting till you come onto new tack and mainsail fills before bringing jib over. This would help to bring bow around. Also are you using to much rudder and stalling out, the rudder accting as a brake.

backing jib

i have to agree with bob, i let the jib/genny back to bring me around a little before releasing. my girlfriend and i have the timing down pretty well after only a month with the boat. jeff.
