furler problem

my roller furling worked great when I first got the boat, so I assume that this is somehow something I did!! My jib seems to furl very tightly around the bottom, but not around the top. The result is that it creases terribly, does not furl right and does not unfurl right. In short, a huge pain in the neck! Is there an easy fix?? john

Sounds Like Tension

The tension that you have placed on the sail with the halyard may be either too loose or too tight, IMHO. :)

you might have to explain that one!

there is no halyard for the jib. The tension on the main would not effect the jib furling, would it?? I had thought about tension, and in fact the last query that I posted (about pointing) several people suggested probably what has happened is that my shrouds have stretched and things are looser, perhaps tightening the shrounds would pull the mast back a pinch and tighten the forestay? thanks for the input, John

furling

I have had this problem during much of this year. I am not sure what influences it, but sometimes the furler worked fine other times, the jib did exactly as you describe. I have tried furling and unfurling a few times and sometimes it corrects itself. I plan to tighten my shrouds when I put the boat back in the water next spring, see if this helps with the furling and with pointing, which seems to be a problem as well.

Me too.

I started to have a furling problem the first time I stepped the mast and trailered to a different location. I have problems unfurling the jib while underway and sometimes even at the dock. I suspect the bail of the furler is too small for the amount of line it must hold when the jib is deployed. With the bail full of line, the inside bail is full and can not spin. Perhaps this is the reason the furling line is too short. More line will not fit in the bail. Thoughts? Brian

Furling problem solved!

I was correct. I installed a smaller dia. line in the roller furling bail and it works perfectally now. The bail is too small for the stock line. Brian

What year

What year is your boat? I'm wondering if Hunter has changed the line dia on the newer 170's

it's a '98

I have had problems with the bail being too crowded, what I have noticed is that it furls tighter in high wind and won't furl all the way, if I detach the sheets and just roll them around the stay, the next time I go out I can't open it all the way because I run out of line. Not knowing anything about furlers, it seems to me that the ideal thing would be to have more line than you need in there, so you never run out regardless of wind conditions. I will try the smaller diameter line next spring. But that is not what I was talking about, the trouble I was having was that it wasn't furling evenly, like the bottom would wind really tight and the top just barely turn, which leads to ugly creased jib and other problems. john

2005 here

Mine is a 2005 and I have the same problem - both with seeming to run out of line sometimes and with the jib unfurling unevenly (bottom still wrapped a couple of times around the forestay while the head is unfurled all the way) - I always assumed the two problems were related. A smaller, longer line seems like it would help, maybe I'll try that.
