furler length v. headstay length

The idea is, that in racing mode, you will be using a sail that is cut to the
'max hoist' on the luff length. The sail will be too long on the luff to be used
on the furler, and will be tacked on the deck rather than the furling drum.
You would remove the drum so the tack of the sail does not have to bend
around it. You would also drop the head swivel below the feeder so you can
utilize full hoist. at that point you are using the furler only as a slotted foil, and
will have the ability to peel to another headsail.
That makes sense. I was imagining using the same sail, and wondering what good it would do to remove the drum. I see how a sail with a longer luff could be used if the drum was gone.

"Here's an interesting quote from the CDI FF7/9 manual. It is in reference to the inability to get the sheet lead far enough forward when sailing with the jib reefed: "If after adjusting the lead block forward you still experience the furler lifting up off the bearing, add a piece of PVC tubing over the stay between the halyard top fitting and mast."

Seems like the problem only happens when there is insufficient downward pull on the sail to prevent the system from rising up too much. I don't know the unit in question, but it also seems you could have a tack pennant with maybe a snap shackle to something on deck to keep it down?

The problem with this argument is simple. None of the other brands have an issue if the foil is a bit short. The drums on them do not move vertically. The fact that the CDI drum does is a problem with the design.

I'd just like to point out that this thread is about using a "used CDI" that had already had the foil extrusion cut for a different boat than what is under consideration now.

I think it is unfair to say the the CDI is not designed properly based on these circumstances. If the unit would of been purchased new and the foil cut to the correct length to match the forestay on the boat it was going and the control lines put on properly we wouldn't be having this discussion as the possibility of it riding up the forestay wouldn't be there. The CDI tech could of just said you need to buy a new foil and cut it to the proper length, but he didn't, he offered the guy a solution to his problem. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Geeze, 'Dog- Just because the tube rides up in a certain condition does not make it a fault- it's just one thing you don't like. Obiously some people like it and I doubt your 5 posts to the contrary will convince anyone otherwise, so why not make another post and tell us how you really feel?

Somebody finally addressed the hoist of the sail. CDI is a good product I think for smaller boats and for trailerable boats (Flexible Furler). You can raise and lower the mast and have a flexible forestay that will not bend, break, etc. during that process. But, if you get into a larger boat, then you do not need the flexible feature. Also, CDI uses their own halyard system and does not use the existing halyard off of the mast, which is much more convenient and if you lost one, you might have another. But, the real question is if the hoist of the sail you intend to bend on the furler is too long and beyond the length of the fuling extrusion. There is a cap on the top side of the furler and so the sail hoist has to be within the length of the top cap and the drum. Inexpensive is nice, but if it doesn't do the job, then it is money spent for naught.
