Furler hanging up

Hi, Hope someone can help with this problem.

Boat in question is a 1993 42' Passage...had to change out the jib halyard as it broke and fell inside of mast. Finallly got it out and a new one installed, the problem now, is the furler sticks as it is furled in and binds up, after putting some tension on the furler lead line it will come free and make a few wraps before binding up again and this happens until the jib is completely furled. When running the new halyard I attached it to the jib head and directly into a vacant pulley at the mast head. Tried lubricating the furler, but it seems to be free, I think the problem maybe topside...and suggestions?

I'm afraid you are correct. Someones going up....

Sounds like the top swivel is binding or hitting the masthead.

Was the vacant pulley, you used, the one that the prior halyard was in?

If the new pulley is off to one side there may not be enuf' room for the swivel .

Probably not much help depending on what kind of furler you have but I had the same problem with my Hood furler on my '94 35.5, mounted in anchor locker under the deck. Had been going on for a couple of years and I just lived with it until a few weeks ago a friend of mine opened the anchor for something and saw the tail end of a small piece of line sticking out under the furler. He pulled it out and it's been fine ever since. If you've got the enclosed Hood furler there could be something jammed in there that's binding.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about attaching the new halyard...."to the jib head and directly into a vacant pulley." You should be attaching the jib halyard to the top shackle on your upper swivel and the jib head to the lower shackle of the swivel. I suppose it's possible that you have a furler without an upper swivel?

We have that problem sometimes with the Geneoa sticking, what we found is the drum that the furler line wraps up onto, at the base of the furler gets bunged up, too many wraps at certain points, jamming up the unfurling... We relocated the closest pulley to allow the line to enter the drum in the most centered position available...
No more problems, maybe every blue moon.... Give her a try if your furler is the same setup...

If it is a Hood Furler, I posted part of the Hood manual, a good and long rinse will clean it, no lubing required.. Make sure the furling line is decored 1/3 of the length, and the line entry angle is as required in the manual.
