Yesterday we were out sailing and my five year old daughter asked if she could "drive" the boat. We were still running under power and no sails. I looked around and saw that there was no one within a couple of miles of us and said she could. She grabbed the tiller and I let go. Just then my wife asked me a question and I leaned over to talk to her. I noticed the boat rapidly changed directions and I looked over at my daughter who was holding the tiller and looking directly AFT! I leaned over to her and said "Honey, when you drive the boat you should look out the front." She looked up at me and said "Oh." Then she started looking forward and put the boat back on course.

My daughter does the same thing

Except she is 17 and does it while she's driving the car.

too cold for me

I love to sail late into October, and have always wanted to drag the boat out in November on some freakish warm day (like 50 degrees F) when the water is still open. . . but ice boats!!! I have seen them on the local lakes, I guess there are only a couple days per year when the conditions are right, no snow, flat ice, good wind, etc. It just looks like hell to me, I am more of a crackling fire and mulled cider kind of guy. and big thick wool socks! Meanwhile it's going to be mid 70s today, and I might have some time this afternoon . . . j

What a rush

to ice sail, just think of the speed they must obtain....... I dont think I could take the cold but it would be fun to try !

Looks like a Home Depot

special, but your right, his heart is in the right place. I cant imagine going 50 to 100 on a sail boat, Gets my heart racing a bit too ! I have seen a few Hybread sail boats that appear to have foils or skies, they also look too complicated to rig or transport. I wonder if there are any videos of the ice sailors in action ?

you tube

go to youtube type "ice boat" into the search window. There are several, can't really get a great feel for the speed from the videos, although the ice is going by pretty fast (and it's really loud!). j
