Oh, the Stories...!
Most Engineers know of the course "It works better when you plug it in", but many times I've had to use the post-grad course "It works better when you plug it in CORRECTLY".
Or, when starting the rebuilt 2GM20 for the first time... it immediately goes to FULL RPM. "OH NO", I think, "Thermal runaway!!!" and in a panic throw the fuel shutoff. Then I realize: 1. Cold engines rarely go into thermal runaway, and 2. I had the throttle reversed so it was full-throttle rather than idle. Oh, and I also realized that if it WAS thermal runaway, shutting off the fuel wouldn't help...

Ripped out all the cabinetry around my holding tank loooking for the leak of brown stuff in the bilge. Couldn't find it; marine technician comes aboard, takes one look and says its not pooh, its diesel goo (leak).
Wow - your poo smells like diesel? (maybe you should make biodiesel...) :)

Thats the whole point: when you think its pooh it smells like pooh. Whether its cooking or brown bile fluid

Yep, first season I launched my boat had the same problem. OB wouldn't start. Sitting the slings, called over the yard mechanic. He said to check the safety cord then shifter position. Still wouldn't start. He checked the battery. Yep, full charge. He tried it and it started right up. "Must have been a loose wire"
Of course the Admiral has the photo of me with my finger on the stop button.

First overnight on my first boat (30 catalina) with family. moving the boat to its new slip. First night it rains and we are motoring down the upper Patomac. Get ready to anchor, helmwife indicates we are in 10' of water, throw the anchor overboard and watch the line run out (still have way on), take foot out of pop eye loop in rode and then wonder if i could actually grab the rode and stop the boat, decide not to as we are still going 5ish knots, it then dawns on me that I don't actually know if the other end of the rode is actually attached to the boat or not. it was (God watching out for dummies again)

My yanmar control panel just has just 4 buttons to push, lined up vertically. From top to bottom they are Start, Stop, Glow, On-Off. More than a few times I changed the battery selector to start the engine, thinking that I had a dead start battery, until I finally realized that I was pressing the Stop button every time I thought I had a dead start battery. The buttons are almost indistinguishable. Good thing I didn't run out and buy a new battery just a few weeks after purchasing a new one!

Good to hear the STOP-button stories... I once couldn't start my motorbike. I cranked and cranked until the battery died, then tried push-starting it til I was totally exhausted. THEN I noticed the RUN/STOP switch in the STOP position... :banghead:

A couple of years ago, dealing with extreme stress. (2 sudden deaths and serving as executors in both, within a 7 month period), I knew that I had to slow down and be more deliberate after attempting to brush my teeth with heat liniment! Normally this and the toothpaste tube are in separate drawers and so I can't imagine how this happened!

Loving all the chuckles here.

Our h36 has a key start and button stop but our previous h30 had key switch and button start. I spent 15minutes one day trying to start the h36 with the stop button. I could hear the fuel stop relay clicking at the engine, thinking I was hearing the starter relay clicking. Once I saw the word 'start' next to the key, I quickly looked around to check if anyone was watching. Nobody was looking so it didn't count...ha
