One thing you might consider is looking to see if they make a high thrust prop for your engine (you didn't say what make or model). Most small outboards come with a high speed prop designed to get small boats up on a plane. It'll work better at low speeds and reverse for you.

Here is a statement that I have never heard. “You know, I wish I had a little less horsepower”.

Planes, motorcycle, truck, you name it, I have never heard that..

1+ on the high thrust prop. Sometimes called an elephant ear prop gives ya lots of push into waves. And current.

Not if the engine is propped correctly for each boat. The correct prop pitch is the one where the engine will reach maximum rated RPM without going over. Engines come from factory with a generic prop size which may not be adequate for either of the boats.

My 50 yrs experience tells me that a 15 hp mtr is too large for a 25' boat. I have a 25' boat and it has a 10hp Tohatsu mtr with 4 blade power prop. Worst condition says 10hp is plenty for these boats. Bigger means wasting fuel and that is not a moot factor on a 25. I used to run my 26' with a 4hp and NEVER was in a power problem situation with it. That included in and out of Tomales Bay which has 8 knot tide runs! Only intended to inform. Chief

That is true but..... if unusable power comes at the expense of unwanted transom weight, then there is a tipping point in that equation.

For instance on my H26, I am at hull speed at about half throttle... maybe a little above half. And in a stiff head wind, it is nice to be able to open it up to 2/3. I have never been able to get the boat to any fast going to wide-open. So why would I want a 25 hp on my boat? Couldn't use the HP and the extra weight would not be a good thing on my boat.
