Full batten sails?

Question: do you need extra "carriages" to run in the luff groove to bear
the load of the full battens or is it just the sail that has full length
pockets?

Hi Hielke

The fully battened mainsail needs special runners at each batten that go in
the luff grove. These are provided when you buy the sail. In the UK these
runners are called "cars" and can cost up to £30 eqach so you can see where
the extra £100 comes from when you buy a fully battened main but the
advantages are well worth the cost. VODA have allowed the Fully Battened
main in Vega One Design Racing for nearly ten years so do not worry if you
are a racing fanatic.
