Does anyone happen to know the dimensions on the 9 gallon fuel tank or where one could be purchased for the 272 oday.

I think for a first shot I would call Rudy at D & R Marine in Assonet, Massachusetts..He
should have knowledge of the original provider and the size requirement..good luck, Pat

Thank you for the reply. I did call D&R & spoke to Rudy about a shaft for the same boat but he wouldn't give me the dimensions unless I ordered their shaft. I'd bet the same will apply to the fuel tank.

I'm pulling my fuel tank out this weekend for a transom repair (don't ask). It'll be out of the boat for a spell and I can measure it up. (1987 272LE)

Here's a bunch of pics of the tank. A friend at my marina had one fabricated last year for a 272, I can get details from him if you want. I googled the manufacturer and I think they're out of business (or not on the internet..).

Let me know if you want me to track down how my friend got his tank.

Mickstr6, thank you so much for the pics and the measurements. It's a real help for me. I've been looking online for one but no luck. If you could ask your friend where he purchased his, it would be most helpful. I hate having to bug you, but these boats are so out of date that it's harder to find parts anywhere. Again, thanks for all your help. Hard Tack

Mickstr6, the pics printed out great. What I don't see is the overall length measurement on the tank top to bottom and the top side depth. I see that the bottom width/depth is 7" but it obviously narrows at the top. If you know or can get me these 2 measurements, that would be great. I will, in the meantime, get out there & see if I can get some measurements from inside the fuel tank area of the hull.

Sorry, was limited to 5 uploads. here's 2 more. I'll get the info on the replacement tank in the next few days.

Where are you located?

Re: More specs

Thanks for the additional pics. I live in Jefferson, Maine. I've looked online for any tanks that come close to the original specs, but am having no luck.

Unless I'm reading your tank wrong, or my 272 manual incorrectly, there is a disparity in capacity of the tank. Maybe it's different from gas to diesel...? Mine is supposed to have a 9 gal capacity (Westerbeke 10-2 diesel inboard), and the plate on yours looks to say 5 gal. 1987 O'Day 272.

Did I see that right? Or is this a gas vs diesel problem?

Upon closer examination, it appears that the capacity shows 9.5 as capacity, not 5...

Sorry for misreading.

Just went out in the garage and verified, and it does say 9.5. Funny, all O'Day specs say 9 gallons. Anyhow, I called the fabricator that made my friends tank last year, and he did not keep the specs.

So, I'm not sure how I can help anymore, other than measuring up my tank more accurately in case you want some one local to make a tank for you based on my specs..

Is 26 years the live expectancy of these tanks? I went down to my boat last weekend and had a large quantity of diesel in the engine compartment. At first I thouht it was from the fuel filters on the engine. However after tightening and placing towel under the filters the towels are dry but the fuel keeps accumulating on the port side.

Let me know if you find a replacement.

BTW, did you remove the fuel tank from the locker or berth side?

To pgiorda, I didn't have a fuel tank in the boat when I bought it a year ago. The previous owner took it out. I will probably wind up having one made, but will get a 12gal instead of a 9.5gal and have it bulkhead mounted. Rudy at D&R Marine mentioned sending me some schematics/diagrams of a 9.5gal O'Day fuel tank but I haven't received anything to date.

Check your fuel hoses. They should be replaced every ten years. I have seen them crack and you can only see a leak when they are pressurized by the fuel pump. The leaking fuel can flow along the hose and accumulate some distance away from the actual source of the leak.

I believe my leak is from the tank which was full in October. The fuel accumulates on the port side where the stringer coming from the aft has an opening. The fuel lines run along the startboard side of the bulkhead and it is dry under the lines to the engine. Yesterday I dipped the tank and it is dry. It was 1/2 full about a week again. Yes, I used a lot of sponges, paper towels to absorb all 9 gallons.

Yesterday I started to remove the tank, however due to time I have to go back and try again to remove the fuel lines and fill hose. After 26 years, and with limited access they are hard to remove.

I'd rather replace the tank with the original size, shape and location. I only go through about a tank in a season so 9 gallons is okay with me. I was concerned about the cost of a custom tank so I started looking at the moeller tanks online yesterday and If I can't put a new replacement tank against the bulkead I am considering placing the 13 gallon tank in the starboard lazarette or a portable tank in the aft locker.

Let me know what you decide.

I found a guy that makes custom tanks from plastic. He says you can send him your dimensions or a pattern and he can probably build it. Ask forTom at Sullivan Plastics in Sullivan, Maine. The phone number is 207-422-2323 or have a look at their website Sullivanplastics.com.

pgiorda, do you know you can take the instrument panel out and access the top of the tank from there? It's 4 screws, one in each corner, and then just some sealant holding it in. Pry it out, and accessing the hoses on top of the tank is much easier.

I already removed the instrument panel, air/overflow, fuel lines, wood panel in rear of port berth. Did you take the tank from the berth side or the locker side?

If it's locker side I'm assuming I have to cut the exhaust hose and and remove the stainless exhaust vent also?

I received a quote for a 5 gallon aluminum tank (3"Dx17"Wx25"H) from KSH for $170. I didn't ask for the original dimemsions since I don;t go through that much fuel in a season and the narrower dimensions should make it easier to get in.
