Fuel Tank Problems

For the second time in about three years I have found a large amount of water in my fuel tank. The tank is always kept full, etc. In talking with the Marina, they said that another Hunter 35.5 was having the same problems. I suspect the tank filler cap is leaking, but I have been replacing the O-rings on a regular basis. Has anybody else had this problem?

water in your fuel ank

I had a 25.5 with the same problem. It turned out to be the fuel filler cap, Even though the o ring looked ok. I disconneded the hose from the filler neck and ran water over the cap. sure enough the water passed right through. I replaced the cap and neck together.

35.5 Fuel Filler Cap

I was bitten by the infamous o-ring problem too. The o-ring was actually split leaving a 1/4 inch gap for water to run directly into the tank. After draining and pumping about 2 quarts of water from the tank I replaced the standard fuel filter with a Racor with a clear sump so I can monitor for any future water before it gets to the injectors. A second filter would not be a bad idea. Simply draining until you see good fuel isn't enough either. There'll still be about an inch left in the bottom of the tank that doesn't cause a problem until you are motoring in enough chop to cause the boat to roll a bit mixing the water in with the fuel at the pick up point. The only way to completely drain it without removing the tank is to remove the fuel gauge and pump it out using a hose that is stiff enough to move around to cover the entire bottom of the tank. I used tie wraps to attach the hose to a dowel and used it like a wand. And you do want to get it all or algie will grow in it and plug up the screen at the fuel pickup. This happened to a friend and he had a real problem getting it clean. I threw out the old fuel and started (in an approved receptical) and replaced it with fresh. Another option is to have your tank and fuel professionaly "scrubbed". I got a quote of $285 for my 22 gallon tank.

I have done it all

Just finished pumping all of the fuel out this week thru the gauge hole. Also replaced the 110 filter with a 120 filter (Plastic bowl with quick drain). After that, I taped the fuel cap area to keep water out until I solve the problem. Now considering replacing the whole filler neck and cap.

ITS HAPPENED 3 STRAIGHT SEASONS

the first time was after I bought the boat . the boats full of friends and family we are motoring along and the engine starts to bang and stops. after dumping the bowls on both racor and engine filters several times we limped back to the marina. I paid $ 300 to have the full tank pumped out scrubbed, filtered, centrifuged and returned back to the tank. I keep the tank full and clean and change filters at the begining of each season but when you least expect it the motor stops and you have to dump and clean the filter bowls. I use the boat every weekend so the tank does not sit idle. I have checked the cap "o"ring and I dont think its coming in there because I have not had a problem after hard rains lasting 5 days. I think it must be condensation coming in the tank vent line slowly accumulating.

5.5 fuel tank woes/fix!

Jim, my o-ring was missing and so I got lots of water in my fuel. I learned to check it often, but if you really want to stop it, just tape it (the fuel cap) with a pre-cut circle of duct tape when closing up for the winter. Not pretty, but very functional. Also, does your vent line go up high above the vent opening before going down to the tank? You might be inadvertantly adding water to your fuel when you heel while sailing or as you take a wave. Also, use treatments in your fuel, Bio-bor for growths, water eater, and a goo stopper. Ask Yanmar, they'll give you their preferred brands for the job! Ron S/Y Best Revenge

Water in fuel

I never had this problem on my Hunter, but I've had it with a previous boat. It was a Dufour 31. There the water came from the fueltankventilation. Check this also. Good luck. Willy S/V JASON Belgium
