Fuel Tank Location

Just bought a 28 1972, the fuel tank was remove and placed in cockpit previous to my ownership. Does anyone know where it should be inside the hull?

On our 1972 28 the fuel tank is directly under the cockpit sole. The fill is just a bit aft of dead center.
