Fuel Tank Hole?

I'm planning on purchasing a Snake River LCD Acugage 4 w/ the additional diesel float for the fuel tank. Living in Michigan my boat is currently under wraps and I forget what the tank looks like. Am I going to need to cut a hole in the tank for the float? If so, what is the best way to do it w/o getting debris in it? Or is there already a precut hole made for it? Thank you in advance for your help. Robert

Just Installed One

I drained the tank by removing the filler hose and used a hand pump. For me this was a good thing because I found about a gallon of water, sludge and alge in the tank. I removed the sink and the divider wall and took the tank out over the hot water heater. There are no hole in the tank for any gauge. You need to drill. I added a link to snake river for their hole layout. Snake River gives you 5 ss screw to tap into the plastic tank. After drilling and tapping I screwed the ss screws with their heads on the inside of the tank and got 5 ss nuts & washers to bolt in the diesel sensor. Note.. the layout holes on the diesel only lines up one way. That threw me at first, I though I screwed up! It wasn't that bad of a job, did it in two half days. Good Luck

Opppps.....Did I mention that I have a composite fuel tank on the '86 Hunter? Will it fit coming out the starboard access in the cockpit?

Don't Know

I have a 1987 31 with a 18 gallon plastic fuel tank and no way would it fit through the starboard access in the cockpit." NO WAY!" There are four nuts holding the sink to the counter top and six screws holding the divider board between starboard cockpit locker and the sink cabinet. When you order the fuel level rod you have to know the inside depth of your tank. They makeup the rod 1" less than your tank's depth.

I removed my 18 gal. tank

on a 31 1984, I cut the original Plastic Strips and lifted it out of its bed. Removed the hot water heater and the hose for the kitchen sink. After I was able to move it out through the kitchen locker under the sink. Cleaned it out and moved it back in place. No Problem siggi

Added gauge without removing tank

I added a fuel gauge some years ago to my '86 H31. It was an inexpensive gauge and don't remember the brand, but it works well. I did not remove the tank, just used a hole saw, carefully removing the chips from the top of the tank while drilling. Then drilled pilot holes for screws to secure the gauge. Did not drill through the tank to put nuts and bolts, but I think I used 5200 as a sealer. I also used the hole saw to drill a large enough hole in the bottom of the aft cockpit locker to see the gauge with a flash light. Cheapest/easiest way and it works fine.
