Fuel Tank Collapse

We developed a diesel leak that kept the bilges mighty smelly, which is a real problem for a liveaboard. After much investigation, etc., we discovered that the plastic (crosslink poly) fuel tank was leaking - on a boat just under two years old! The forward molded in baffle had collapsed and was bulging out the bottom of the tank (which has no supports under it). I find it hard to believe that they would use a material that can't handle the fuel, but we are completely baffled by this event. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? Has it happened to anyone else?

My guess is a clogged vent line...

...That resulted in more pressure inside the tank than it could handle. However, I'm a bit surprised that it didn't pull a vacuum that prevented fuel flow before the tank "surrendered." That it developed a crack is prob'ly the only thing that's kept your engine running. Fuel vent thru-hulls have very small openings which are covered by screen that very easily becomes clogged with dust and pollen...and they rust--which also clogs them. Unfortunately boat builders are fond of using the same vent thru-hull fittings on the water and holding tanks as well as the fuel tanks. It's absolutely essential to make sure that ALL tank vents remain completely clear...which means inspecting them regularly and cleaning them out, or even replacing fittings, as necessary.

450 Fuel Leak

I have heard of another 450 fuel tank failure that also had a poly tank on a boat in Florida. I also just heard from a friend in New Orleans that told me about a 450 there that has sprung a fuel leak. After installing a water maker, I am considering changing out the forward water tank and installing a fuel tank since fuel is harder to find than water. I was thinking about a poly tank, but after hearing this, I will stick to aluminum. Best of luck, but I believe that Hunter will certainly back that up.

New Orleans Leak

Since we are in New Orleans, we are probably the ones your friend was talking about.
