I want to clean the 22 gal diesel fuel tank. I tried a company but they can't get a straight access. What pump can I use to pump out the fuel, I was thinking of using an oil change pump to remove the bulk of the fuel and then using a shop vac to suck up the junk at the bottom. Any ideas? Thanks Ozana

Gravity???

My tank is under the cockpit and higher than the engine. I think that I could disconect a fuel line and gravity would mostly empty the tank.

Porta-Quick

Ozana, I bought a Porta Quick oil changer when I had the same problem. Get several 5 gallon cans and pump your fuel tank dry. Reverse the flow direction and use some of the fuel to wash the bottom of the tank and suck it out. The biggest problem is what to do with the bad fuel. I have a neighbor that is in construction and he desposed of it. Good luck

siphon

The fuel tank on my 1984 H34 is well above the level of the main salon sole. I siphoned the fuel through a Westmarine funnel filter into containers, cleaned the tank, and poured the fuel back in through the regular fill port. The siphoning took a while, since I used a small diameter clear hose. This took time, but I felt I had the process under control. And the funnel filter only supported a low flow rate anyway. For cleaning the tank, if you can get the fuel down to a small enough amount, you should be able to wipe the tank bottom with rags, and pick up the gunk with the last of the fuel.
