We are still new to most things about our boat. This past weekend we went to the boat to bottom paint and discovered diesel fuel? near the aft vent and on the ground. We topped off the tank before storing and added stabilizer. It is stored outside in Michigan. What happened? What do we need to worry about now? We can use all help and info you can give us. Thanks.

Happened to me too

twice. I think we put a little too much in the tank prior to storage and when it gets a little warmer the fuel expands and goes out the vent located aft. Also possible that when they store the boat it is on a more aft angle than when in the water which again might allow fuel to exit the vent. Whatever the reason once I burned off a little fuel after launch I did not have any leaks all season.

That's a good reason, also check

inside at the vent and fuel fill connections to make sure they remained tight and that the hoses are in good shape. With your C34, you my be interested in the link, and choose to join the C34 International Association (www.c34.org)

fuel spill happened again

thanks for the info. Went back to the boat last night and noticed more spillage. We are going to pull off the panel and check the hoses this weekend. Going to take your advice about the association, too. Any ideas on getting it off the boat?

Just a horrible thought, but has it been raining

heavy in your area ? I mean, no chance the fuel fill cap is missing or leaking and allowing the tank to overfill? It's probably just expansion, getting warmer every day.

C34 fuel issue

U wrote: "Any ideas on getting it off the boat?" I assume you mean the "excess" fuel. What I would do is to use the fuel pump creatively. Get a five gallon diesel fuel jug, disconnect a hose from the fuel pump (a hose to the fuel filter underneath the head sink, or the fuel line to the engine -- you might have to get a connector and an additional length of fuel hose) and just turn the key switch on and have the fuel pump pump the fuel into the jug. This will reduce the fuel in the tank, and put it into a suitable storage cannister. When you start using the boat, then refill the fuel tank with the jerry jug fuel later in the season. We look forward to your membership in the Association. You didn't mention the year of your boat, but if your fuel cap is leaking catalinadirect sells replacement plastic fuel caps for your vintage boat if it's a Mark I. Re:Just a horrible thought

I think that it must be expansion. Pulled the cap last night and it was tight as a drum.

Re: C34 fuel isue

What I meant to say was how to get it off the hull. A friend of mine suggested using rubbing compound. I guess at this point it couldn't hurt.

OK, once again, it sounds like What IT is...

If it's diesel fuel on the hull, just use soap & water. Depending on the condition of your hull, do whatever is necessary after that. Also don't understand "pulled the cap & it was tight as a drum." What was tight? If the cap was tight it MEANS that your VENT is NOT working. That could very well mean that the tank was overfilled, the vent line was full, too, and you need to do what I suggested earlier.
