Fuel shut off or emergency decompression?

I just bought a 1987 Catalina 27 with a M-18 diesel. Is the pull handle beside the instruents a fuel shut off or emergency decompression? The m-18 manual warns that using the emergency decompression will seriously harm the valves, but the previous owners routinely used this handle to shut down the engine with no ill effects. Were they simply lucky? The engine starts and runs fine.

It's Ok!!

I thought the same thing and asked the same question two years ago. Your OK!! The black handle T in the cockpit by the gauges is a fuel shut off and NOT the decompression lever. Jack
