Can anyone tell me where I can find a new fuel shut-off cable for my 1982 Hunter 27? The one I ordered from West Marine did not have the theaded end to attach to the bracket on the engine. Yanmar 8 hp.

Generic Cable

I dont have a Yanmar but most engines have a clamp that holds the outside of the cable. On my Nanni it is just a metal tab that a screw that clamps the cable to the engine. I replaced my cable with a generic one I picked up at a Napa auto parts storem for about $12. Before I put it in, I pulled the cable out of the housing and coated the cable with waterproof grease. Good luck Best of

Buy a New Yanmar one

I just replaced mine with a new Yanmar one for $29, last year they were $68 the dealer told me Yanmar had lowered the prices on some items.. why fool around with generics to save $10 or $15.

Do9n't replace it , clean & relocate

The cable You want to replace, will rust again, disconnect the old cable slide the wire out of the cable hsg, clean with oil and 400 emery cloth, oil and relocate the cable/ T handle, inside the boat, and it'll never rust, I've located mine under the qtr. berth. with the T handle under the nav sta.

Put mine down below too.

Tom: I replaced mine many years ago. It was so rusted and corroded that it was breaking the Yanmar control panel. That is when I decided to move it to the inside of the boat. I mounted ours to the top of the engine compartment (our boat is a 1985 Hunter 31') I used a Morse cable. It has an angle mount with a handle. Very easy to install and easy to use. Works as good today as it did 10 years ago when I installed it. The cable run is also much shorter too.

CABLE ATACHMENT

Steve, et. al: I just purchased a 5' Morse cable with the intention of mounting the handle end at basically the same place as you did. Problem is that I can't figure out how to attach the "engine" end. I got the screw end into the small block on the engine shutdown lever just fine but pulling the handle just moves the sleeve. Does it need to be connected to the same "J" bracket the original was? If so, how? I am only slightly mechanically challenged and can't figure it out! HELP!!!! Thanks (actually my wife thanks you since she is sick and tired of pulling the engine cover every time we shut the thing down!). Tim ("TIDE")

When you got the cable did you indicate that it was for a Yanmar? It has been so long ago that I cannot remember how I did this. As a matter of fact I cannot remember what I did yesterday but that is another subject. What I do remember was that this was actually very simple. I drilled the hole through the top of the counter (about 30 deg angle) mounted the chrome bracket shoved the cable through and then attached to the engine. Don't think that it took more than an hour or so and a beer or two. It is out of the way and very easy to pull after 10 years.

Thanks for all the info.

Thanks to all that replied. I got on the Hunter webb site and they replied with an e-mail saying that the cable came with the engine and to contact Mack Boring, a Yanmar distributer. I did and they refered me to a Marina in Port Clinton, Ohio. Brands Marine. They have the cable in stock and are mailing one right out. Thanks again.

STEVE

Steve: Thanks. I've got the handle end installed fine, but I "think" I need to attach the cable not just to the shutdown lever on the engine, but to a bracket on the block itself. Do you remember what you did? I'm leaving on a 12 day cruise this Sat and it would be great to have it done before we leave. R/ Tim (TIDETIM@aol.com)

Unfortunately, I will not be at the boat until Friday evening. This cable should hook up just like the old one. I am sure that I would not have been able to figure it out either if it were not just a swap. It did seem that there was a bracket on the side of the block but as I said this was a long time ago. Sorry I cannot be of more assistance.

Cable Arrived.

Brands Marina did a fantastic job and sent me the correct Yanmar cable. I ordered it on Tuesday and it was deliverded to my house the next day. $29 shipping and all. Only took 5 min. to hook it back up as I had pulled a wire through when I removed the old one. Great service at a reasonable price.

STEVE

Steve: I'm probably not going to have time to figure out the cable attachment issue before we leave tomorrow for a 12 day Chesapeake Bay cruise. If you get a chance this weekend, take a look at your set up and let me know how the Morse cable is attached to your block and either let me know here or at my e-mail address (TIDETIM@AOL). Enjoy your weekend! Thanks again for your help. Tim

Tim - attachment

Tim: Looked at the cable attachment this afternoon. What I found is a little bracket that was in the shape of a "J" on the front of the engine. Now on the previous cable I think that there was a fitting on the end of the cable and a nut was screwed on there. But mine is kinda jury rigged, but is has worked fine. We put a hose clamp on the cable about 1" back from the end and then put the cable on the "J" hook. Then there is another hose clamp on the other side of the "J" hook. This holds the end of the cable from moving fore/aft and it has worked fine for many years. I lent my camera to a friend so I could not take a picture. Hope this helps.
