Does anybody have recommendations on Spring opening for the fuel system on a Hunter 290? How often should the fuel system separator/filters be checked/drained of water? What is the recommended procedure? Thanks for the help.

Depends

Depends where you are getting your fuel and how often you use the motor.when I had a 290 I always purchased my fuel from truck stop and than had a special funnel with built in filter into jugs and than into the boat.
It's up to you depending how often you use fuel and treat it,it can't hurt to check the filter often and drain it for water or remove it to check for dirt and or water, when reinstalling it fill it with fuel and should not need to bleed it.
Doing this keeps from waiting to brake down with clogged ffuel filters.

I agree with Nick. Look at it this way. What is the cost of a fuel filter? What is the cost for a tow back to your harbor when your filter is clogged? This should be an easy answer to your question. Me, I change mine filters about every 2 years, and I have a water seperator with a drain cock in the bottom of it, and I can see what is in there. In my sailing area, the Mississippi River, you can't afford to break down on the water. There is a fast current, barges, and locks to worry about. I keep at least one of everything that may break while on the water. Only had to replace an impellar onece, but that was enough. Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the input. I wish I had a drain cock on the separator. The fuel cut-off is behind aft berth wall. Not too difficult, but it wouldn't be fun in an emergency. I may add an additional cut off.
