I am going to replace the fuel pump on my 1998 2GM20F Yanmar diesel. Seems fairly straightforward job. However I am wondering if a gasket sealer is usually used on the pump's new gasket or if it is put on dry? Appreciate your input- Thanks and happy sailing. Pete

They come with a gasket

And my mechanic said they don't fail. Instead, the fittings on either side of the fuel lines fail over time because they're tightened too much and stripped. Be sure to turn off the petcock out back to stop the fuel.

Gasket

Pete, Put it on dry. You will be fastening it to the block which is cast iron and should not strip out. But you don't need to over tighten. On the other hand when you fasten the fuel lines to the pump it is very easy to strip out the threads. Use new copper washers. And be careful when you install them as the thickness of the left side washer is different than the right side. Les Andersen s/v Mutual Fun

Thanks

Appreciate the input. The gasket on the top of the fuel feed pump appears to be seeping fuel. I am putting a new pump on and will re-build the old one for a spare. Pete & Crystal s/v Eastern Sky

rebuilding fuel pump

I recently replaced mine and the manufacturer said they could not be rebuilt. Let me know if you find this to be incorrect. thanks

Mechanics trick ;;;

Grease the gasket with a thin layer of the heaviest grease you have, Doesn't matter a whole lot what it is. Grease holds the gasket in place during assembly and allows clean disassembly without scraping years down the road. (Or is that down the river?) You'll thank me 20 or 30 years from now.

Also make sure you get the cam follower on the right side of the camshaft. As you mount the pump the actuator arm can get on the wrong side so it will pump nothing.
