Fuel Pume in 30' O'day??

Hello, My 30' 1979 O'day has had a AMGauge Fuel pump model 12/2401 installed into it some time before I purchased it. It is not presently wired to the 12Volt system so not working electrically, but the fuel line does run through this fuel pump. My Yanmar works perfectly but does take some cranking to start. I am wondering if others have installed this pump and should I wire it up to the 12volt an use it, or remove it and run the fuel line direct to the filter?? Also any tips on a good filtersystem to use for the diesel fuel.

I have a 30 O'day with a Universal diesel. It requires an electric fuel pump to run. I guess yours has a mechanical pump. Is it possible your boat originally had a Universal diesel and the electric pump was left in place because the installer thought he needed it and disconnected it latter. It would seem that if it is left in line the effect would be to restrict fuel flow.
