Has anybody removed the pickup tube from the O'Day 39. What is involved? I have female elbow at the top of the tank, beyond that I don't know what. I'm hoping the pickup tube is not permanently fixed. Please advise I want to remove the screen that I believe is on the tube and allow the the primary fuel filter which is much easier to service do the job of removing water and sediment. My 1983 O'Day 39 ran slow and died on me in rough water. After sitting a while it started again and seemed ok at lower RPM's, but it would bog down and die as I increased engine speed. I'm guessing that there is a screen on the pickup tube that is getting clogged when rough seas stir up sediment and the greater suction of higher speeds grabs the particles. Any thoughts other thougts on this. P.S. I'm also planning on pumping out all the existing fuel..and flushing as thouroughly as I can.

Fuel line

I'm assuming that you have cleaned/replaced both filters. (the water seperator and fuel filter on the engine itself) I'm replacing the other end (fill and vent hoses) this year, but I am not familiar with the other end. Mine has an electronic fuel pump, could that be causing you intermitten problems. Also, consider that if there is a screen as you suggest, one would need to access this area for "reguar" cleanings-and I do not see that to be the case, but as I said-I have not taken those hoses off to confirm that there is a screen.....good luck, let the rest of us know how you made out, especially where there are not too many responses to your question...

Last Year

Last year I had a simular problem. I had just purchased my Oday 30. The boat ran fine the fall before when I first looked at it. I had it shipped to my boat club in the spring. I launched it and it started and ran fine. However after installing the mast I was motoring back to my dock and the engine just stalled out. I started it up and it ran for about 20 seconds and quit again. Long story short, since I live far away from my boat. I had the diesel mechanics that take care of our crane look at it. They changed both filters and bled the system. The boat still wouldn't run properly so they pulled the pickup tube. The screen on the bottom was clogged completely. They were thinking the same thing as you. remove the screen and let the large filter do the primary filtering. They didn't do that thinking it took 22 years to clog but if it does it again we will. I'm also thinking of either having the tank drained and cleaned or trying to find a service that will properly clean the existing fuel. My brother told me of this service existing on the ocean front. They hook your tank up to a filtering system and run it thru until it's clean. I'm located on Lake Erie and there doesn't seem to be many diesel services available. Good luck
