Fuel line over Transom not good

The only problem that I have had with the H 23 since I bought it is the fuel line. I have tried three different fuel hoses, changed fittings, etc. and still the fuel has problems going up through the transom and back into the 6 HP kicker. I think it is a gravity thing, whereas the fuel does not want to go up from the deck, over the transom and back into the kicker. I hate to drill holes in any boat, but I might have to go through the transom to solve the fuel gravity problem. Anyone else has had this problem? Recommendations.

Fuel to outboard

Seems obvious, but you have the air vent on your fuel tank open, right? I had a similar problem this year, and the culprit turned out to be the connector at the end of the fuel line going into the motor. The engine would run as long as I pumped the the ball on the line, then cut out. A leak in the pump could be another cause - but it sounds like you replaced that. Crud anywhere from in your tank to in the carb is another possibility. Don't cut a hole - that probably wouldn't fix the problem.

sounds like....

a bad fuel pump. Perhaps a cimped hose or the vent closed.

A friend who had an H23 had his fuel line go through the transom. It worked OK until his O/B was stolen. They cut the fuel hose and shoved it back through the hole. It fell into the locker and siphoned out the whole tank. Was a real mess to clean up. I would recommend you devise some method of preventing this from happening if you do go throught the transom.

bad hose

Is the priming ball full when you squeeze it? If you have a good seal between the gas tank and the engine and the vent is open the motor pumps the gas into it. No need to syphen or cut a hole.

I will try again

Dave, I have tried three different hoses. Two of them, new, from Wally World. ((Cheap)) The other I use on a 15' Whaler with a 40HP Outboard, has an inline filter and never have I had problems with it. The reason why I am trying to rule out "gravity" is because all three fuel lines that go flat / no fuel on the pump / bulb do work on the 40 HP. Even though I have to change Johnson (OMC) to Mercury female fittings between outboards, which is a pain in the a$$, and smelly. I prime the fuel line, hook it up to the kicker, turn it on and after a short minute or so the line and bulb are dry and the engine shuts down.... ...Have to keep pumping the bulb to push the fuel up the hose, over the transom.... I am doing this with my foot while I steer the tiller. It is pretty cool because no one knows that you are sweating it to keep going.... Us new sailors know that we are being observed by others salts as we come back in... I do have the original Nissan Motor that came with the boat, but I have not even tried to start it. It looks more like an anchor...I think I will built an artificial reef with it someday... Seriously, this is very frustrating. Everything else, - except the mast light {it comes on and off} (bad contact) and - the water pump for the sink are ship shape. She has been on the water almost three weeks now. Happy Thanksgiving to All!!!!

My '87 Nissan works like a charm. I've never used a fuel line, just put a few drops of gas in the internal tank to get in and out of the marina. Mac

fuel pump

If you have to manually push gas into the motor the fuel pump is bad. Go on ebay and pick up a manual on the motor for 20 bucks. It will give you trouble shooting tips based on symptoms. Is gas leaking when you prime? I hooked the gas line backwards once, and pulled gas from the motor into the gas tank. Good luck.

Probably the fuel pump

I had a 5 hp Tohatsu (Nissan clone) that had the same problem, I replaced the fuel pump diaphragm and everything was fine after that. I'd suggest getting the shop manual and going from there. I'd also wouldn't recommend drilling any holes through the transom. The core is hollow and opens into the area beneath the cockpit. There's no watertight bulkhead separating the under-cockpit area from the rest of the hull. I'm gone for turkey day but will be in touch when I get back. Peter H23 "Raven"

Nissan motor part

If anyone on this thread has given up on their Nissan 5 hp, I'm looking for the ratchet that engages the flywheel when the starter rope is pulled. If you know where I might find one, I'd appreciate that info too. Thanks.
