Fuel Lift Pump Hi there. Today I had alot of trouble starting my Westerbeke 20b-2 engine in my C-270. Once I got it going, the motor idles, but when the throttle is increased, the motor dies. Appears to be some sort of fuel starvation problem. I changed the small filter today (waiting for shipment on the water separator filter), to no avail. How does one check if the fuel lift pump actually works? When I changed the smaller engine filter, a steady (stinky) stream of fuel ran out. So I think the lift pump might be ok. Not sure, tho. Any ideas would be appreciated!!! Thanks

Lift pump

On my boat if I disconnect the input fuel line from the injection pump and turn on the ignition key without actually cranking the engine I can hear the lift pump and fuel should come out of the line at a good pace. Obviously this is of course an electric pump not mechanical. Hope that helps

The fuel pump has a filter

on the bottom of it. Could be clogged. Clean it out and replumb from your fuel tank to the Racor then to the fuel pump.

Lift pump

Is this the first time you are starting your engine for the season? This may be a wild guess if you don't come across any clogs, but if you had your boat laid up for the winter, you may have to treat the fuel with biocide if you haven't already done so. Even if this were the problem, it would still lead to blockage of some sort. I have a friend put their hand on the fuel pump with the key turned to on and you can feel the fuel flow going through it if it's working.

Hi Guys..........

Got the pump on today.and it clicks. I guess I remember that. Engine seems to run fine. Does the pump run not only when the glow plug circuit is activated but also on the oil pressure switch.. i.e. anytime the engine is running?? Thanks Doug
