fuel gauge

During our July trip on Catalina 34, my fuel gauge jumped from "full" to super full, or way beyond the mark F. By the time it comes down to the F mark, it takes about 11 gallons of diesel. I have checked the connections on the back of the gauge and all are now clean, but problem still persists. Any ideas?Thanks

sender unit

Take the sender unit out of the tank and test the full motion of the arm. You should be able to make the gauge go from empty to full by moving the float arm. If this is the problem, West Marine can sell you a replacement for about $25. I just got the kit which includes the gauge and the sender arm and replaced both. Works fine now but these units only seem to last 5 or 6 years.Good luckJeff

Jeff - Resealing?

Jeff -- What would you use to reseal the sender unit to the tank? Mine appears sealed with a black-color, pliable sealant -- don't know what it is. Suitable for diesel? Thanks.Mike TurnerS/V Amity

Hi Mike

The kit I got came with what looks like a neoprene gasket. The base of the sender unit attaches with 5(?) screws which creates a tight seal with the opening in the tank. I took the old gasket with me to West Marine to make sure the hole pattern matched what I had on the top of my tank. It was a pretty easy job.Regards,Jeff
