Fuel gauge is a poor guess

3YM30, 480 lifetime hours on engine, 2009 Hunter 36, 0.58gph averaged over the two seasons I've owned it burning 75 gallons of diesel, mostly cruised at 3,000 RPM. Pretty happy with that. I've learned my fuel gage is fairly accurate, and my initial fuel burn calculations were too pessimistic (which is the side I'd prefer to err on). Keeping track of hours (or miles in a car) and knowing the average fuel consumption (or miles I can typically drive) is a habit I've always had, and it has never let me down with regard to never running out of fuel.

French boat: use metric! It won’t really help but since most are already confused go worse! When averaging the diesel furnace can be taken into account... or not! Better to look for fuel when gauge shows 1/4 and carry a jerrycan! I burn 2 liters/hr and have 130 liter tank but in May, June, September and October I run the heater all night that is the conversion factor to US measurements!
Luckily we have sails...
