Need some help or thoughts as to the eratic operation of the fue gage. The needle bounces all over the gage. some times it just sticks at the empty mark but most of the time it jumps back and forth. Thanks Mic
They have a great website that explains how gauges work. They also make replacement parts and assemblies for the sender, which is usually what goes south first. You could also, if you have an engine hour meter, forget, as I dod, the gauge altogether. I put together a spreadsheet that records time and gallons used, and find I use less than 1/2 gallon per hour. 23 gallon tank, keep no less than half full, every twenty hours I fill it up. Very simple.Stu
After the fuel guage on my Cat 270 flickered from full to empty for several days it went dead. The marina mechanic had me remove the sending unit electical connectons (top of fuel tank) and connect them together. Mometarily turning on the ignition showed the guage moved to full proving there was no problem with the guage or electical connections narrowing problem to the sending unit in the tank. Six screws need to be removed to take the sending unit out of the tank. Took it to the marina for a match to a new one ($30). Installed new unit. Everything works fine. Make sure the tank is not full of diesel when you remove the sending unit.
