I have a 1977 27ft hunter that was sitting for three years before I bought it and I just recently got her in the water. While still on the jacks I had the engine running fine on the old gas that was in the tank. I made the mistake of not listening to good advice and did not empty and flush the tank. Just like people told me ,once in the water and rocking the engine shut down. So I removed all the lines and old filters, cleaned the lines replaced the filters then disconnected the tank (could'nt squeeze it out) drained the fuel put some tank cleaner in and really shook it around. I also got a pipe cleaning brush into the fuel intake and scrubbed the inside. checked it several times by putting diesel in then draining and looking at it and its clear. My problem is I refilled the tank about halfway but I can"t get the gas to flow. My thought was by cranking the engine it would draw the fuel out of the tank,no luck. How do you restart the fuel flow. I would really like to get the boat out this season but its not looking good Any advice. Thanks George

First we need to know the kind of engine you have on your boat. Inboard or outboard? Who is the manufacturer of the engine? Is it gas or diesel? I thought the older Hunters had diesel Yanmar engines. If it is gas you might have a clogged fuel line, bad fuel pump, water in the carb.
If it is diesel, the same applies (except for the carb) but you might have air in the lines. In any case you probably need to bleed the air from the lines.

Just realized you mentioned Gas and Diesel in your message.

If in fact it is diesel you must be sure there is NO water in the tank or lines. Water will destroy the injectors. Probably just air in the lines but might be a fuel line sucking air which would need to be replaced. Bleed the lines from the pump towards the injector.

You have not mentioned a fuel filter. You have to have one. Most if not all diesels have 2 filters.

I have the same problem with my H-27 and H-30. When every you open up the fuel system you need to establish a siphon from the bottom of the pickup tube in fuel tank to the primary filter on the wall of the engine compartment. (I am assuming that the screen on the bottom of the pick up tube is not clogged).

You can you lots of methods but my favorite uses a large plastic irrigation syringe that you can get in a drug store. You take the rubber fuel hose off from between the primary fuel filter and the secondary filter on the engine. With the plunger on the syringe pushed in all the way you stick the pointed end of the syringe into the rubber hose and pull back on the plunger. If you don't get fuel into the barrel of the syringe crimp the rubber hose with a vice grip, remove the syringe, push the plunger back in and stick it back in the hose. The remove the vice grip and pull back on the plunger. If the fuel filter was empty you may need to do this a few times. Keep repeating until you get fuel and no air into the barrel of the syringe. Once you get all fuel when you pull back on the plunger, remove the syringe and let the fuel flow into a cup or small can just to make sure its flowing. Once it flows evenly quickly push the end of the hose back onto the secondary filter on the engine. Have rags around to sop up any spilled fuel.

My less favorite method, and one you use if you are in the water and don't have a syringe is to disconnect the hose for the secondary filter and suck.... Have a cup near so you can spit if you get diesel in you mouth. If you do it will make you sick and gag and probably will cause cancer or something but sometimes you have not choice....

I guess you could use the manual flit pump but I've never had success using that little pump to get all the air out of the fuel lines and the filter.

You can also do the same thing with the hose between the tank and primary filter but you'll need to open up the vent on the top of secondary filter.

The idea in either case is to get the siphon flowing.....

Thanks for the idea I'll give it a try this weekend, you know I almost tried the the mouth idea, then I told my brother to try (no go) so I'll get a syringe and see how that works thanks again

If you have a screen at the tank end of your fuel pickup tube, remove it.

If you need to pump your fuel to get it going, consider installing an electric fuel pump after your primary filter. You can decide to run it from the ignition switch and have it on all the time, or just to bleed the engine, makes it a LOT easier than tyring the manual method.
