You didn't supply a description of the filter unit, but many Hunter's of that era were equipped with a Perko primary fuel/water separator. The units were a machined bronze casting with the Perko name and model embossed in the side of the casting. The unit had a screwout top with O-ring that accessed the element inside. The element was nothing more than a expanded bronze screen that filtered larger contaminants. The unit did little filtering and primarily allowed any water and sludge to settle to the bottom of the bowl area. There was a plug on the bottom of the bowl used to drain the water/sludge. The unit fit into a seperate mounting ring with ears that was easily broken if you exerted lots of torque removing/tightening the top. Replacement elements/screens have become very scarce. For that matter, photos of the unit seem to be non-existent too.

Today, Racor units are popular for use as the primary separator/filter. I have two older Racor 110's in parallel with valve switching which serves me well especially in emergencies. These units are all metal and use drop-in filter elements. I don't have the luxury of visible bowls, but then again I don't hesitate when I toss things into the lazerette for fear of breaking the bowls.

The Racor spin-on type filter/separator is very popular and readily availabile. The ease of filter changes seems to cancel the negative of higher initial cost. The Racor 120 series is probably the most popular with sailboats like yours. For just a little more cost but with added conveinence, I would recommend a 215 series with a built in pump. The pump makes for easier priming and bleeding of the fuel system.

Same idea here. Pretty sure that Jonny is talking about the old Perko unit described by cbsailor. The first time I opened mine I found the screen had turned to mush. Fortunately the previous owner had added a good Racor between the Perko and the engine. I cleaned it out but left it in series so that I would not have to buy a longer fuel line. Call me cheap.
