Fuel filter -- water

I have had a 306 for a year. Everything I read about fuel and filters states that you must keep checking for water. My boat has a stock Racor 110A fuel filter which has a metal bowl on it. The only way to check for water is to lay on your back and use the drain plug. O.K. I can do that! My question is, If you open the drain plug will the oil and water drip out slowly and will the fuel be sucked from the tank so that there is no need to prime the filter. If not,why even have a drain plug? If you must prime can you insert a bulb primer in the fuel line between the tank and the filter. You Know, the outboard type primer.

Racor 110

Richard - I have a 290 - pretty much the same boat. If you are going to drain the Racor, you might as well just change the element while you're in there. They are cheap enough - 12 bucks and the # is R11T. As for priming, all you have to do is fill the bowl with fresh fuel before you spin it back on - that leaves very little air to bleed out.

Squeeze bulb works great

The outboard type squeeze bulb works great when priming is necessary.
